The Marine Science Center organized a training workshop entitled
Harmonic analysis of water level data
The workshop, presented by lecturers Dr. Ali Abdul-Razzaq Lfta and Dr. Adel Jassim Mohammed, aimed to highlight methods of analyzing sea level fluctuation data using specialized software to determine the frequencies at which tidal waves travel and calculate the amplitude and phase difference of those waves, given their extreme importance in maritime and navigational activities in coastal areas.
The workshop showed that the harmonic analysis method for sea level data is one of the most important methods used to calculate the effect of both astronomical tides and other factors such as meteorological effects or river discharges, and to determine
the percentage contribution of these factors to sea level change in coastal areas, which has a direct impact on marine currents and, consequently, on sediment distribution, pollutant transport, and coastal land stability.
