The University of Basra Organizes a Workshop on the Calibration of Laboratory Equipment

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a scientific workshop titled

*Calibration of Laboratory Instruments: Requirements and Standards*

The workshop aimed to enable participants to understand the fundamentals and requirements of calibrating laboratory instruments in accordance with international standards (such as ISO 17025), and to enhance the accuracy of results and laboratories’ compliance with quality and accreditation requirements.

The workshop, presented by Dr. Bassam Ashour Rashid, covered basic concepts of calibration, its importance, the difference between calibration and adjustment, and its technical requirements, including environmental conditions, qualifications, and traceability to reference standards. ISO 17025, ISO 9001, and local regulations were reviewed.

The steps of calibration were addressed: planning, performing the calibration, calculating uncertainty, and documenting results. In addition, the calibration schedule and labeling, handling non-conforming equipment,

Uncertainty analysis, sources of error, calculation of expanded uncertainty, and subsequently documentation and calibration certificates, validity of certificates, and review of results.
